Disintegration in a Globalizing World

Séance 1 : Is the World Moving into Fragmentation and Turbulence, and Why?

Before scrutinizing specific issues in the past year, how should we evaluate the global situation? Is the world moving into more disintegration and division, as we observe the troublesome developments in Europe and the Middle East, as well as the China-U.S. competition? What are the main causes of such turbulence? Is it caused more by “black swans,” idiosyncrasies of political leaders, mismanagement of state affairs, or by long-term trends such as socioeconomic inequality worldwide and shifting power balance in international politics?

Moderateur : Yuan Ming
Intervenants : Thierry de Montbrial, George Yeo, Andrey Kortunov, Yan Xuetong

Session 5 : A Changing Global Order

A global order has at least two components: the power structure of the world and the rules governing global affairs. Both components are undergoing significant changes. China is definitely a rising power, a game changer that is reshaping the global power configuration, but it would not be advisable for China to see others as declining powers or to change the rules that have benefited China’s economic growth for decades. Meanwhile, other countries must also think of ways and means to improve the current global order. The participants in the North Pavilion Dialogue are stakeholders who should make joint efforts for a stable and prosperous world, especially for the younger generations.
