Debating the borders of Europe

With elections to the European Parliament fast approaching, the public debate has tended to focus on Turkey’s candidacy to join the European Union. There may be more pressing issues but this very fact reflects anxiety about the definition of Europe. For Thierry de Montbrial, most Europeans are not yet culturally prepared to regard Turkey as “one of them”. He declares “We need time to adjust”.
